Mr Bond, who once served four years in prison for fraud, said he hadn't yet recovered from his wife Diana Bliss' suicide last year.

"I loved her so much, she was a fantastic woman in her own right and we really had everything going for us," Mr Bond told Channel Ten Revealed, with Hugh Riminton reporter Emma Dallimore.

"It was heartbreaking to lose her. It's something I'm getting over.

"I'm not over it yet, but it took me the first twelve months - I was shattered."

Ms Bliss died aged 57 in their luxury beachside Cottesloe home, seventeen years after their marriage in 1995.

It was reported that Mr Bond, the man behind Australia's historic America's Cup victory in 1983, was home at the time.

"The first 12 months was awful to put it bluntly," Mr Bond said. "I mean I'm ready to move on, but it still will take some time."

She left him a suicide note which read: "My love, I miss you. You will always be with me."

Her depression was identified long before her death and for more than a year prior to her suicide, Mr Bond acted as a full-time carer. But he was unable to pull her out of her "black spot".

"When someone gets into such a black spot, it's very difficult to get them out and it requires a great deal of strength from themselves," he said.

"You do the nurturing. For the 15 months before Di passed away I was a full-time carer for her.

"We never went out and with all the ability of the best medics in the world to treat her, we couldn't get through that barrier. She couldn't get through the barrier."

Ms Bliss, a theatre producer, and Mr Bond were married three years after he divorced his first wife, Eileen Bond, in 1992 – the same year he was declared bankrupt with personal debt of more than $600 million.

She actively supported Mr Bond during his trial for fraud, in which his lawyers claimed he had Alzheimer's disease and depression, and visited him regularly during his four-year jail stint.

Mr Bond spoke to Revealed, with Hugh Riminton from his countryside home in England, where he and Ms Bliss spent much time together. It was a place he hoped would bring her peace.

"Diane used to love it here," he said. "I tried to get her out of her dark spot by bringing her here and she loved the walks. It's just a peaceful place."

Mr Bond had struggled to come to terms with the nature of his wife's disease.

"You see the uselessness of it and it always hurts the people left behind more than the person," Mr Bond said.

"As I see it, there's no easy answer - you just have to learn to live with it."

After already making his way through bankruptcy and jail time, Mr Bond said his wife's death was "the closest I've ever been" to breaking point.

It was returning to London that brought him peace, after both Ms Bliss' death and the death of his eldest daughter Suzanne Bond, whose body was found in her Perth home a day after returning from London in 2000.

"It was about eight months after [Diana's death], I came out of the Farm Street Church in London where I had just lit some candles for Di and for Susan, when I was walking back to the hotel and all of a sudden it just lifted," he said. "It was like you reach a point and it lifts.

"I think it's a question of are you going to give up, or are you going to go the next 100 yards of your life? And for me, giving up is not really an option."

With the 30-year anniversary of his America's Cup win approaching, Mr Bond said he remembered it "like it was just yesterday". "It was a David and Goliath story," he said.

It was also something that contributed to his financial and legal troubles.

"It made me identifiable all over the world," he said. "If I could achieve a win in the America's cup, is there anything I couldn't do?

"The reality of that is I think the ego got a bit ahead of myself and I really did take on some fantastic projects.

"I became known to all the bankers in the world and they threw money at me."

With his colourful and controverial past behind him, Mr Bond said now he's just getting on with life.

"I think you have to show that you're bigger than the problems and get on with your life," he said. "And make something of your life, which is exactly what I'm doing."
