The clip for the single Guts brought together dancer Simons and Michael Bones from the band Elisha Bones, eight years after they graduated from the same high school.
And while they had pursued separate careers since that time, Simons said friends from their hometown "weren't necessarily surprised" by the collaboration.
Perhaps the more amazing point was the pair, friends since starting Kindergarten together at Dubbo Christian School, had worked on much of the music video from opposite sides of the world.
The pair headed to Dubbo as the project attracted growing attention online.
"It was certainly fun and I think our school friends got a kick out of that," Simons said.
Since graduation Bones had studied law and carved out a place in the Canberra music scene as part of Elisha Bones.
Simons is a freelance artist after working with West Australian Ballet, Chunky Move and touring throughout Australia, Asia, Britain and America.
It was while Simons was in New York that he received an email from his old friend letting him know Elisha Bones was about to release its first single.
"I contacted Joseph because I knew we had to create an engaging, really cool music video (for Guts)," Bones said.
"Joseph has been a dancer for as long as I'd known him, and I knew he could create something amazing to go with the song."
Simons said he immediately fell in love with the song and respected the sound of the five-member band.
"It never felt like a favour for either of us, it really felt like a project worth doing and it was really exciting," he said.
The video was shot in London under the watchful eye of fashion photographer Konstantin Kochkin, after many more emails between the old high-school friends.
Both have returned to work since the mutual friend's party that prompted their reunion at Dubbo.
The band was in Queensland yesterday with award-winning producer Magoo to mix its EP's third track.
Simons headed to Germany after winning a fellowship to further his choreographic development, but before leaving he did not rule out further collaboration with Elisha Bones.
"The band is keen to have a really visual effect to go with its songs and I'm keen to help out in any way I can," he said.
