In what was a decisive win on points over Ballina's Mickey Kelly, Dubbo's latest boxing prodigy, at just 16 years of age, is potentially staring down the barrel of a hugely promising career, according to his newly-anointed trainer Robert Toomey.

Toomey was awash with praise for his latest fighter, who after joining his stable back in May, used a distinct height advantage over Kelly to command a massive points charge in front of a capacity crowd at the Moree Boxing Academy's Pro-Am event on Saturday night.

"Braidon's only a slightly framed guy for somebody his height," Toomey told the Daily Liberal this week.

"He's got a pretty long reach compared to most guys in his division. He was able to just stand back and jab away (at Kelly).

"His fitness really got him over the line the other night too. He fought a really smart fight, where his opponent was sharp for about a round-and-a-half, Braidon was able to go the full three."

“He was pretty impressive to watch,” he said.

The title fight came as a surprise to both Newman and Toomey who were both unaware they were in line to contest a NSW championship when they arrived in Moree.

That said, Toomey’s charge was able to shrug off any pre-fight nerves to  claim his fourth scalp from six bouts.

“We honestly thought we were going there to fight for a north-west region title ... a state title was never really in our minds, but he handled it pretty well,” Toomey said.

Newman was one of three fighters flying the flag for the city at Moree.

Dubbo’s Nathan Riley went down to Casino’s Mathew McQuewan in the second of their three-round bout while the city’s sole female boxer Briarne Luckie took on McQuewan’s stablemate Kara Ann Barnes in the only exhibition match on the night.

After a well-earned break from training this week, Newman will resume preparations on Monday for his next fight in Newcastle later next month.

The young Dubbo charge could also stand in line for another title fight at home in October, in what might be a possible rematch against Wagga Wagga’s Tobias Krebs.

The pair last exchanged blows in a cracker bout at the Dubbo RSL back in May.

Fighting just under his current 57kg weight, Newman went down to Krebs - but a change of trainer and his newly claimed state title to defend could be enough for the youngster to level the score should they meet again later this year.

“He looks like taking on Krebs again if he fights here in Dubbo again this October. 

“It looks like being another title fight, which I’m pretty sure he’ll be looking to keep.”
