The investigative work is called rod and roping, an NBN Co spokesman said and it was part of the work announced in May with the rollout of the first module.
"This allows us to assess the space available in pits for the fibre cables," the spokesman said.
"Following the development of the detailed design Telstra undertakes network remediation, where necessary, and then the process of fibre hauling commences."
The spokesman said the penultimate step would then be the connection of fibre to premises.
"Finally the active electronic equipment is installed and activated ready for services to be switched on," he said.
