The 36-year-old man from Geurie was trapped for a short time in his vehicle.
He and his eight-year-old family member had been travelling towards home when the collision occurred at the intersection of Cobra Street and Windsor Parade.
The sole occupant of the other vehicle, an Orange man, was also taken to Dubbo Base Hospital but later discharged. Emergency services were called to the crash scene on the Mitchell Highway route about 6.25pm and began a rescue while diverting traffic.
Dubbo Rescue Squad captain Neil Sturrock said they had to release a man from the driver’s seat of a Daewoo Lanos.
The car door was removed during the rescue, which took about 10 minutes, he said.
The occupant of the Holden Commodore was already out of his vehicle by the time the squad arrived, but Mr Sturrock said all people involved were “fairly lucky”.
“For a two-car collision in town there was considerable damage,” he said.
An Ambulance Service of NSW spokesman said the two patients from the Daewoo and an elderly male had been taken to hospital suffering minor injuries and in a stable condition.
Officers from Orana Local Area Command began investigating the cause of the crash.
The Daewoo, driven by the Geurie man and carrying the eight-year-old boy in the front passenger seat had been travelling east, Inspector Andrew Hurst said.
The Holden had been travelling west and was turning right into Windsor Parade when the crash occurred, he said.
Parts of the Daewoo wreck trapped the driver’s legs, he said.
Police were waiting for the result of blood samples taken from both drivers as part of normal procedures, the inspector said.
A spokesman for Western NSW Local Health District (LHD) said the 36-year-old man was in a stable condition, as was the young boy, and both were in the Dubbo hospital.
The older man had been discharged, the spokesman said.
