This leg of the interschool competition kicks off today at Dubbo at some of the city's finest sporting facilities.

Bathurst are in a strong position to have back-to-back wins after beating Orange High School by 28 points, a week after the latter dominated Dubbo in the competition opener.

While a win for Bathurst would culminate in them taking out the coveted prize, a win for Dubbo would hand Orange the title.

But this could all change, according to Astley Cup co-ordinator Kieran Smith, who planned for his talented team of young sportsmen and women to make a comeback after their disappointing performance against Orange in the opening contest.

"The playing conditions were against us in Orange but it's a lot warmer over here and I think it'll be a very different story," Smith said.

Tennis will be the first cab off the rank today, taking place at the Paramount Tennis Club on Wingewarra Street from 9.15am with Sam Wells the player to watch.

For debating fans, the Mulvey Cup debate will take place at the Senior Campus lecture theatre from 10am.

The soccer will kick off at Lady Cutler oval from 12pm (girls) and 1.30pm (boys). Local players Taylah Gray and Josh Archer-Feros are set to turn heads for their teams.

Archer-Feros is well known for his efforts with the Western Mariners.

Last week Dubbo lost 3-0 to Bathurst in the boys' soccer with the latter scoring in the last 10 minutes of the game, dashing Dubbo's hopes of a win.

This, Smith said, was not a true indication of the game.

"Bathurst are very strong in girls' soccer but Orange beat Bathurst last week. They seem to have greater depth but our goal is to minimise our losses and finish with a good result," he said.

Hockey will wind up the first day of competition at Pioneer Park from 2.30pm, with regular Blue Jay scorer Emily Lake one to watch out for.

Tomorrow year 12 student Samuel Coe will hope to dominate the 100-metre sprint at Barden Park from 9.15am, part of a lighter Dubbo athletics side.

Smith said the Dubbo boys would still be "stinging" after their loss to Orange, and was looking to Kaide Ellis to lead the team to victory at Apex Oval from 11.30am..

Netball and basketball will draw the 2013 competition to a close at Dubbo Sportsworld.
