NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell and Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner yesterday paid tribute to Mr Peacocke who was the Member for Dubbo from 1981 to 1999, and held down ministerial positions between 1988 and 1993.
Mr Peacocke died peacefully in his sleep about 3.30am yesterday at John Whittle House, part of the Orana Gardens aged care facility in east Dubbo.
News of his death led Mr O'Farrell to honour the late Dubbo resident for his service and style.
"Gerry joined the National Party in 1949 and distinguished himself through his long and dedicated service to the people of Dubbo and the National Party," the Premier said.
"As the Member for Dubbo between 1981 and 1999, Gerry always stood up for his local community and made sure they got the infrastructure and services they deserved.
"He also delivered for his community as mayor and councillor on Dubbo City Council.
"I was saddened to learn of Gerry's passing and I send my condolences to his family and friends.
"Gerry was one of the true gentlemen of NSW politics - admired by MPs on both sides of the house."
Mr Stoner said he was saddened to hear of the loss of "a great custodian of regional NSW".
"Gerry represented the Dubbo community with distinction for more than 30 years and had dedicated his life to building regional communities," he said.
