A group of five goodwill delegates from Toyama City travelled to Wellington to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of sister city relationships between the two towns.
Wellington's mayor Cr Anne Jones welcomed Toyama City deputy mayor Kunio Oizuki as well as four other representatives from Toyama including two city assembly members.
Toyama City mayor Masashi Mori was also scheduled to also attend, however he was unable to make the journey.
"It is the first time in five years we have had visitors from Japan and we are excited to welcome them to Wellington and show them around our area," Cr Jones said.
Wellington Council signed a sister city agreement with Osawano Town (merged with Toyama in 2005 to become Toyama) on August 24, 1992 and since that time has hosted a number of visits from delegates and students to Wellington.
While in Wellington, the goodwill delegation attended a light supper with councillors on Sunday. This was followed by a formal meeting at the council chambers yesterday. They then headed out to the Japanese Gardens, which was funded by Osawano Town in 1999, before completing a tour of the Cathedral Cave.
This visit will be followed-up by a group of city delegates who will travel to Wellington in September.
