The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) received funding from the Rotary Club of South Dubbo at their first charity black tie ball at the Dubbo Base hangar on Saturday night.

About 410 people turned out for the inaugural event, which was a roaring success according to organising committee chairman Henry Jom from South Dubbo Rotary.

Mr Jom said he hadn't heard any negative comments from the ball, which is set to return in two years time.

"It was a very successful evening. It was the first time our club has coordinated an event like this," he said.

"Our last ball was 10 years ago and was put together by our RFDS support group. It was great to see the event take place at the hangar."

He said the entertainment by singer Peter Byrne (the voice of Neil Diamond) was excellent and that Qantas pilot Captain Richard de Crespigny's speech grabbed everybody's attention.

"He spoke really well and everybody paid attention when he told us about the important work the RFDS do in the country," he said.

Captain de Crespigny was labelled a hero after calmly landing a packed jet and saving the lives of 466 passengers when flames burst from an engine shortly after take-off from Singapore's Changi Airport in 2010. The aircraft failure damaged the wing and left a trail of debris across the Indonesian island of Batam.

Mr Jom said South Dubbo Rotary raised an estimated $20,000 at the ball, and handed over a cheque worth $43,000 from August last year.

"We raised $43,000 from Destination Outback in August. We presented the RFDS Dubbo support group with the cheque at the start of the night.

"I can't begin to thank everyone for all their support, especially the patrons. I hope to once again hold a ball at the Dubbo Base hangars in two years time.

"I have a lot of appreciation for the RFDS. No one can understand how important their work is.

"People who live in a big city would sometimes take it for granted but what about those citizens living in the bush?

"I'm happy South Dubbo Rotary has raised funds for such a worthy cause," he said.

The $43,000 cheque was presented to the RFDS Dubbo support group and its chairman Terry Clark by rotarians Peter Scott and Dubbo MP Troy Grant.

Mr Jom will present all proceeds made at the ball to the RFDS at a later date.

Destination Outback was the brainchild of a group of South Dubbo Rotarians at a meeting held in 1988 and two years later a group of members and their guests headed off under the direction of Howard Laughton.
