May 2004 - Malcolm Naden linked to the aggravated indecent assault of a 15-year-old girl in Dubbo.

January 2005 - Police link Naden to the murder of a cousin, Lateesha Nolan, who remains missing.

June 2005 - Malcolm Naden disappeared after the body of Kristy Scholes, the partner of a cousin, was found in the bedroom of his family's home in Dubbo.

December 2005 - Police closed Dubbo's Western Plains Zoo after Naden was spotted there. Naden evaded capture after a huge police operation before Christmas. Police said they believed he was surviving by eating fruit, stolen food and being helped by contacts.

January 2006 - Naden's relatives begged him to hand himself in to police, after sightings in Moree, Coonabarabran and Coonamble. The only two confirmed sightings were at Grawin, near Lightning Ridge, and at Western Plains Zoo.

March 2006 - Naden again avoided capture after a team of about 60 police, accompanied by dogs and a helicopter, searched for him at the Willow Bend Village Aboriginal mission in Condobolin.

January 2007 - Police announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to Naden's arrest. Usually, rewards are paid upon the conviction of a wanted criminal. It was the first such bounty offered since the hunt for the Kelly gang after a string of murders and robberies in 1878.

January 2009 - Naden was thought to be behind several break-ins in Bellbrook, inland from Kempsey in northern NSW, in which food, torches, camping gear, warm clothes, raincoats and binoculars were stolen, while valuables were left behind.

August 2010 - Naden was believed to be armed and living in dense bushland near Curricabark, northwest of Gloucester, after reports of thefts from properties near the Woko National Park. One resident reported his .22 calibre rifle stolen.

September 2010 - Police confirmed Naden's DNA profile matched blood found at the scene of a break-in at Stewarts Brook, 50 kilometres east of Scone, in early 2008.

October 2010 - A pig hunter told The Newcastle Herald he came across one of Naden's bush camps in Barrington Tops.

February 2011 - Police upped the reward for Naden's arrest to $100,000.

December, 2011 - Naden allegedly shot a 33-year-old police officer in the shoulder as investigators closed in on him at a remote camp site near Nowendoc, before he again evaded capture.

The reward for Naden's arrest rose to $250,000.

January 2012 - The headquarters of Strike Force Durkin, set up to find Naden, moved from Nowendoc to Gloucester.

March 22, 2012 - Police captured Malcolm Naden in rugged bushland west of Gloucester just after midnight. "Thank God it's over, I've had enough," he said, as officers arrested him.

- Naden was charged with the 2005 murder of Ms Scholes, two counts of aggravated indecent assault on a 15-year-old girl and intent to murder a police officer.

April, 2012 - Naden was led by police to the banks of the Macquarie River bank near Butlers Falls, south of Dubbo, as officers searched for the body of his missing cousin, Lateesha Nolan.

- Police laid 14 extra charges, including 11 counts of break, enter and steal, two charges of breaking into a house or building and stealing items worth less than $15,000, and another charge of enter dwelling with intent to steal an item worth less than $60,000.

July, 2012 - Naden was moved from the Goulburn Correctional Centre, a Supermax prison, to Sydney's Long Bay jail for medical treatment, as he had trouble adjusting to confined spaces.

August, 2012 - Naden was charged with the murder of his cousin Lateesha Nolan. His barrister, senior public defender Mark Ierace, SC, told the court his client was being treated for a significant mental health issue, understood to be in part as a result of his many years alone in the wilderness.

October, 2012 - Naden was charged with breaking into Dubbo's Western Plains Zoo in 2005.

November 2012 - Naden waived his right to a committal hearing and a trial was set down for February.

February, 2013 - His barrister, Mr Ierace, told the Supreme Court Naden needed to face a mental fitness hearing in March.

March, 2013 - The Supreme Court is told Naden's mental health is no longer an issue and he will enter a plea.

March 22, 2013 - Exactly a year after he was captured by police, Naden pleads guilty to the murder of two young women in 2005, the attempted murder of a police officer and all other charges against him.
