The 71-year-old from Mudgee pleaded not guilty.
Magistrate Andrew Eckhold was told the man was unable to drive due to health issues.
"His brother lives in Sydney and has been assisting with driving,'' Legal Aid said.
"It is difficult to get to the police station to comply with reporting conditions.''
Magistrate Andrew Eckhold said police could check on the man at his residential address.
"Such a check may be made by telephone,'' the magistrate said.
The man will reappear in court for hearing on May 3.
Interim apprehended violence orders were imposed to protect the alleged assault victim.
