Tight fields to ensure good racing at Warren

THE curtain will fall on the 2012 racing year in the central west when the Warren Jockey Club hosts its cup meeting on Sunday.

Seven races are on the program, with the $15,000 Warren Cup (1200m) attracting eight runners, including recent Dubbo winner Sea Commands and consistent performers So Light, Vigneron, Godliness, General Hirad and Pennyforyathoughts.

Narromine trainer Kylie Kennedy should play a major role in the race with her speedy type Pennyforyathoughts and recent stable acquisition So Light.

The latter, to be ridden by Greg Ryan, will be having his first start for Kennedy after being transferred by former trainer Sarah Murray-Leslie. While his best efforts have come over longer distances, his new trainer is convinced he can run well.

"He's won first up in the past and Sarah, who still owns him, has sent him to me to try and sort out a few issues he has," Kennedy said.

"There's no doubt he'll be better as he gets out to a trip but he's going well enough at home for me to think he'll run a race on Sunday.

"Those staying types can often sprint well fresh so I'm hoping he will do that."

Three of the main hopes in the race - General Hirad, Pennyforyathoughts and Sea Commands - are coming out of an 1100m event at Dubbo prior to Christmas.

On that occasion Sea Commands slipped up along the rails to nail Pennyforyathoughts with Narromine Cup winner General Hirad hitting the line well for fifth.

Kennedy is hopeful that race will prove the form for Sunday's event.

"Pennyforyathoughts still did a few things wrong the other day and Jeff (Kehoe) had to stop riding him with the whip," she said.

"Sea Commands got in front but then he put in late and was probably back in front a stride or two after the post.

"He should lead on Sunday and I've been trying a new bit on him to try and get him to settle.

"I think it should be a handy enough form race and if Penny can settle he should run another good race and be hard to run down."

The Warren Cup (1200m) is the final event on the seven-race TAB program and will be run at 5.25pm.
