The Campbelltown couple sang a duet when asked to define what marriage is for them. "It's about commitment, equality within societies, and demonstrating our love for each other," they said.

The NSW branch of the Labor Party is expected to vote in support of gay marriage at its annual conference next month, calling for a change in national policy which only recognises marriage as between a man and a woman. The vote is likely to increase pressure on the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, to legalise single-sex unions.

The NSW upper house MP Penny Sharpe said Labor state conferences in Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia have adopted similar motions calling for equal marriage rights for the gay and lesbian community.

Ms Sharpe said it would be the first time the issue would be debated at a national Labor conference, to be held in December this year.

She said the priority for Labor had been to eliminate sources of discrimination against same-gender couples. ''The Labor Party has a proud history of supporting equality and this is the final piece in the puzzle to removing discrimination against same-sex couples.''

The Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, has said she is not in support of legalising gay marriage in Australia.

A spokesman for the Opposition Leader, Tony Abbott, said the Coalition position at a national level was that marriage should be between a man and woman.

The NSW Liberal Party MP for Coogee, Bruce Notley-Smith, said he supported ''the rights of all people irrespective of sexual orientation to be able to marry'' but said he had higher priorities.

''The issue is a federal responsibility. But there is always an opportunity for state members to put their views forward.''

A spokesman for the NSW Premier, Barry O'Farrell, said: ''As the Marriage Act is a Commonwealth Act, the party position would be one adopted federally.''

Meanwhile, Brendon and Michael are talking about a ceremony at Belgenny Farm in Camden - ''we're country boys'', says Brendon - that hopefully will take place before their parents get too old.

Michael's mother is eager to see her son declare his vows. "I always said to her, when I find the right man, I will definitely have a wedding,'' he said. ''And then when I met Brendon, she was over the moon."

"She's the one always saying: 'When are they going to change these bloody laws?'"
