Rugby club begins signing up junior players

10 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
The 2010 rugby season is not too far away and the Dubbo Junior Rugby Club has begun its registrations.

Last Friday night 73 players braved the weather and attended the Rugby Clubhouse at No.1 Oval to sign up.

The Roos second sign on night will be this Friday, February 12 from 6pm to 8pm at the clubhouse with a free sausage sizzle on offer.

Changes in the management committee for this year sees Tony Hollman take over as president from Tim Koerstz, with Tim staying on as vice-president to assist in the smooth changeover for the new committee.

The new secretary is Hillary Grey while Dean Kilpatrick remains as treasurer and Stuart Burke stays on registrar. Vince Gordon is the referees convener; Michael Fraser the sub-junior co-ordinator with Kevin Saul as publicity officer.

Roos sub juniors, the under-7s, -9s and -11s are planning a trip to Lindfield on March 26-28 for a carnival. After a few years of not travelling as a unit for a pre-season competition everyone is looking forward to this trip. The Friday night competition for sub juniors will begin on April 30 at 5.30pm at No.1 Oval.

The under-13s, 15s and 17s are hoping to continue in their current form. With Dubbo Roos being premiers in two of the three grades, the club is looking for new players to help maintain this position.

Tony Hollman said: “We try to field at least two teams in each grade. A couple of years ago we had three in the 17s and 15s. We are looking forward to everyone coming along, whether an old hand or a first-timer.

“All coaches, managers, trainers and ground marshals are Smart Rugby qualified and coaches are accredited by the ARU. We have a very close connection to the senior club and quite a number of them help at training and come to the games.

“The younger ones get a real kick of the seniors taking an interest.”

Training for the Roos starts at 4.30pm, Thursday, February 25 at Katrina Gibbs Oval behind Office Works. Details check out the website www.dubbojuniorrugby.com.au or Stuart Burke 6882 5703.
