The Manly Sea Eagles currently face the arduous task of sacking one of their two standout grand final wing superstars - ‘Wolfman’ David Williams or hat-trick hero Michael Robertson.
Dubbo resident Ronny Gibbs knows only too well what goes into making such a heart-wrenching decision, but when it comes down to deciding between two players from his former club, the man they call ‘Rambo’ was lost for words.
Both wingers are off contract after 2009 and are asking for roughly $150,000 or more per season to stay with the club.
According to national media, sources close to the club say Manly simply can’t afford to pay $400,000 for two wingers.
Gibbs said he couldn’t seperate the two for talent, claiming both were equally as good as each other.
He believes the task of choosing which one gets the chop is one no man would like to make, but said if it came down to the wire he would keep Williams because of his huge popularity and following.
“Robertson has speed to burn and the ability to score a try from anywhere on the park and he has proved this,” Gibbs said.
“There are a lot of wingers who just finish off a try from five metres out or the from the 20-metre line, but Robertson scores them from anywhere with no worries and Williams is in the same boat.
“If I had to choose though I would have to keep Williams because he has such as great following, which can only be good for the club.
“I’m just glad it’s not me making the final decision.”
Williams, 21, affectionately named ‘Wolfman’ for the beard he grew during the 2008 season, has been a revelation in his debut season, playing 20 first grade games and scoring a grand final try to cap off a dream season.
Wellington-born Robertson has also proved to be a shining light for Manly, scoring three tries for his side’s record 40-0 grand final win against Melbourne in October.
Player managers Steve Gillis, for Robertson, and David Riolo, for Williams have recently met with Manly coach Des Hasler and according to Gillis the club indicated they wanted to keep Robertson, who they see as a senior player.
