Hausia the man to take club forward: president

02 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
The Dubbo Rhinos will look to newly appointed first grade coach Paul Hausia and president Dallas Pomfret to take the club forward in 2010.

Hausia has been around football clubs for a long while and is well respected at the Rhinos.

Pomfret is confident he is the man to get the best out of the players and see the side elevated on the competition table.

“Most would know Paul from his days with the Roos but he’s now been with us for a while, helping out the various coaches and the forwards in all the grades,” Pomfret said.

“He’s a man of very good principles and rugby knowledge but will be asking the players for the same respect of him. He’s taking his new role very seriously and surprised a few by his decision to play first grade prop as well.

“He recently went down to the Central West trials to see if his body was up to it and came away with renewed enthusiasm. I would suggest he will be leading by example and asking his forwards to back him.”

While most would agree that the Rhinos have ‘failed to deliver’ in past central west seasons, if the body language from the coach and president are any indication they have a different direction this time around.

Pomfret has Andrew Dixon as his secretary while the coaching staff are Hausia (1st grade), Ricky Medway (2nd grade), Darren Larson (3rd grade) and Ian Burns (Colts).

Their first outing will be in the Western 10s tournament which they host annually at Apex Oval.

This year it will be held on Saturday, March 13 and the club is hoping to attract teams through the Central West and Western Plains divisions.

There are also club trials at Coolah on March 20 with the central west competition getting underway on April 10 - immediately after Easter.

First up the Rhinos will travel away to Cowra and their first game at home will be against reigning first grade premiers Narromine Gorillas in round three, hopefully under lights at Apex Oval.

Regular training is now underway each Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6pm at the touch ovals behind Office Works.

Two of the new faces are brothers Rob and Mick Burns from Narromine and a couple of other former Colts from different clubs.

Late last week the Rhinos also welcomed Bordelanu Constantine, a Romanian flanker who has played the game in Italy and in other countries in Europe.

He’s only 20 but he’s a solid build. It will be interesting to see how he shapes up.

He comes to the club after making contact through the rugby player search available to players all over the world. Already the Rhinos have an international flavour with Englishmen Alan Thompson having stayed on from last year while Manbir Mann is expected to return soon.

The likeable Alistair Maxwell will be a late starter to the season having undergone a major knee reconstruction during the off season. However, he is back having a light run but at the same time taking each week as it comes.

The immediate playing future of the club’s Country Cockatoos and Australian Tens flanker Ross Duncan is also clouded having suffered a shoulder injury while playing in the United Kingdom.

Poor performances from the Rhinos may be a thing of the past with Ian "Burnout" BURNS in charge of the colts. This hugely talented individual can be described as the pinnacle of athletisism and dedication. If any one can prepare these up and coming superstars for future honours it is the man commonly referred to as the "Birmingham Flyer". Keep an eye on Mick Burns this year , as far as I can recall , very exciting Rugby League player in his days with Narromine.
