Fijians’ playing futures still up in air

07 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
No doubt one of the issues that will be brought up at the Group 11 annual general meeting this Sunday will be where the Fijian imports will be playing in 2010.

Illisoni Vonometeiratu, Epi Neiyoko, Marika Korovui and Semisi Tora all played for the Parkes Spacemen in 2009, but have been linked to a move to Dubbo CYMS - the team who beat them in the grand final.

Last month CYMS president Kevin Walkom announced at his club’s presentation evening that next year the four players would be playing for CYMS - the same club as their close friend and Bob Weir Medalist for Player of the Grand Final, Epa Navale plays.

But according to Parkes president Graham Cole, that won’t be happening.

“They’re signed with Parkes for 2010 as far as we’re concerned,” said Cole, who saw the four players off on the plane home to Fiji on Saturday.

“It’s all a bit confusing at the moment, both for the players and club officials, with a lot of things coming from all different angles.

“But utility forward Epi and winger Marika are definitely committed to Parkes.”

Cole said he was not sure whether the players fully realised the impact a move to another club within the same group competition would have on inter-club politics.

“They’re all really close friends and laid-back fellas,” Cole explained.

“But they’re signed with us and if we can get them visas they’ll be playing for us.”

Political tensions between the Australian and Fijian governments have made obtaining visas much more difficult in recent times with Macquarie Raiders failing to get star prop Kinni Tanaulucavu back in the country this year as well as the plans of Nyngan Tigers and the Dubbo Rhinos Rugby Union Club being cut short by the Department of Immigration.

“It is not on the agenda but I dare say the issue of the Fijians will be brought up at the meeting,” Group 11 secretary Bob Walsh, who plans to stand for re-election at the AGM, said.

“From what we’ve been told they’re still under contract at Parkes, plus they’ve still got to get back out here in the first place.

“I don’t see it (playing for CYMS) happening.”

Walsh said the fact the four Parkes players did get through the gates at Kingsford Smith International Airport earlier this year threw a lifeline to Parkes, who were close to folding after a number of first grade players moved to Woodbridge Cup side Trundle.

But the club went from strength to strength and Cole was confident of another strong 2010.

Illisoni Vonometeiratu charges into Josh Large during the 2009 Tooheys New Group 11 grand final. There is speculation the two could be team-mates in 2010 with CYMS announcing at its presentation evening last month that Vonometeiratu and three of his Fijian team-mates at Parkes Spacemen would be playing for CYMS next year.
