Defending Group 11 premiers Dubbo CYMS will start their title defence with their first training run under the tutelage of new coach Joe Williams tonight.
Williams will take charge of his session at No.2 Oval tonight and said he has deliberately chosen a later start to get back into training with the intention to hit the ground running.
“I’m looking forward to getting into game specific training - plenty of ball work and plenty of skills,” the former NRL player said.
“I want to coach these guys to play a very structured style of football. Set up plans for thinking through a set of six and then getting to your kick and working out the best places to kick to.
“Obviously it will be a challenge but these guys are all very good players and I don’t think it will take them long to learn the things I want to teach them.
“I think everyone will probably target us a bit because we are premiers. Obviously we will have a talented roster with the majority of last season’s squad returning but a few have moved on or aren’t available until the middle of the season due to injury.”
All three grades will be training together and Williams added that all comers are welcome for all grades, including new and current players.
Williams will be supported during the training drills by a talented coaching staff including CYMS juniors’ mentors Justin Yeo and Bernard Wilson and newly appointed reserve grade coach Shane Madden.
Williams was named coach of the Fishies shortly after their upset 2011 grand final win over Parkes at Pioneer Oval in September.
He marked the move by quickly announcing the signing of former Macquarie utility Adam McDermott before swooping on the availability of last season’s Group 11 player of the year Corey Stanley, who returned to the region despite having a chance to join one of Williams’ former clubs South Sydney.
Williams retired from rugby league after the grand final win to focus on coaching and his boxing career, with details on his next fight to appear in a story in tomorrow’s Weekend Liberal.
