Airing Dirty Laundry: Spaceman's comments puts focus on Parkes import

08 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
Group 11 is officially on ‘Benji Watch’ after an explosive column in the Sunday Telegraph revealed the Bob Weir Medallist and NSW Country representative had severed ties with the Parkes Spacemen.

John’s relationship with Spacemen captain-coach Pat Rosser has long been a topic of discussion within the Group but comments attributed to Rosser in Sunday’s column put things firmly in perspective.

“He has a bad attitude and I don’t cope with players with bad additudes,” Rosser said.

“...as far as I know he’s walking around with his leg in a brace so where he ends up or if he even plays at all next year I don’t know.”

The 2010 Bob Weir Medallist played the bulk of 2011 with an injured knee, which required surgery in the off-season, hence the need for a brace.

But there had been rumblings in the early part of the season that John wanted to join Forbes, where his girlfriend was living.

The Daily Liberal contacted both Dubbo clubs this week however, both slammed the door shut on trying to recruit the Papua New Guinean while Group 11 secretary Bob Walsh admitted there had been no transfer forms lodged with him by another club.

“Sunday’s column certainly made some interesting reading but at this stage I haven’t got any paperwork about Benji,” Walsh said.

Meanwhile, both Macquarie coach Jade Williams and his CYMS counterpart Joe Williams denied any interest in securing John.

“We’re pretty right at hooker,” Jade Williams said.

“Jeremy Smith did the job for us last year and we have Jock Byrne as well as Kieran Cubby, who is coming up from the under-18s and is really enthusiastic.

“Benji is a very good player but with three hookers already in the club that have been with the club for a while I don’t think we’d be going after him.”

CYMS already have one of the best hookers in Group 11 in Luke Jenkins, with Joe Williams conceding he was quite happy to stick with the multiple-time premiership winner.

“Luke Jenkins is an 80-minute player and one of the most creative players in the competition so I think we’re pretty solid in that area,” the 2011 Bob Weir Medallist said.

“If Benji ends up somewhere else in Group 11, whether that’s Forbes or somewhere else, then we’ll deal with that when we play that team but we won’t be going after him.”
