St Laurence’s Dubbo won the year 5-6 competition 16-12 in golden point time over St Mary’s Dubbo, but both teams go through to the Peachey finals to be played at Apex Oval on June 27.
In the year 3-4 final, Narromine’s St Augustine’s defeated Dubbo South Primary 16-12 and again these teams will come back for the Richardson finals on June 27.
Further qualifying carnivals will now be played at Orange next Tuesday and Coonamble on Wednesday and finally at Bathurst on June 6.
David Peachey was at the carnival yesterday and made special man of the match awards to Matt Burton (St Laurence’s) and Jack Smith (St Augustine’s).
The senior game turned into a real thriller between two evenly matched teams, and most of the players turn out together with St John’s in the junior league on Saturdays.
Coached by Justin Yeo, St Mary’s kicked out to lead 8-0 after tries to Harrison Carlow and Paddy Haycock but Tom Quinn reduced the margin to 8-4 at half-time.
Then Burton scored his try for 8-all and when Kobi Wilson’s barging run produced their third try, St Mary’s led 12-8.
But the Marty Nelson-coached St Laurence’s weren’t about to be denied and it was Thomas Nelson who levelled it up again. That was the score at full-time before Will Stellmacher scored the winning try.
Both coaches were warm in their praise for the attitude of the players who produced some first class attack and defence.
“They’re all mates and it was a game played in excellent sportsmanship,” Justin Yeo said.
