Dubbo martial artists ready to fight

25 Jun, 2009 04:00 AM
Members of the Pollets Martial Arts Centre will head to the USA next week after winning the overall team trophy at the International Sports Karate Association (ISKA) 2009 Winter Nationals for the second year in a row.

Black belt members of the Dubbo dojo, Angel Towney and Kayla Garner will represent the ISKA Australian team in the US Open World Championships in Orlando, Florida.

They will be joined by eighth degree black belt Hanshi Ian Pollet from Dubbo and Daniel Crouch from Orange.

Hanshi Ian Pollet came out of retirement last year to win the World Cup’s grand championship in self-defence and kata, which involves unified movements against imaginary opponents.

Pollets marketing co-ordinator and apprentice to Hanshi, Jessica Mullins, said the team will have the chance to train with some of the world’s most prominent martial artists.

“The team leaves on June 30 and will be away for two weeks,” Mullins said.

“They will fly to Orlando to compete at Colorado Springs Resort at Disney World on July 3 and 4 in the US Open World Championships.

“Once completed they will fly to Las Vegas for the Martial Arts Super Show and the chance to train with martial arts greats including UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) fighters Matt Hughes and Chuck Liddell.

“They will also attend motivational talks from Tony Robbins, a luncheon with Dana Wise and meet Brazilian jiu-jitsu founder Renzo Gracie and his student Ricardo Liborio.”

Pollets has three dojos at Dubbo, Orange and Bathurst and all six team members from Dubbo at the Winter Nationals at Windsor, including Angel Towney and Kayla Garner, placed in their individual disciplines.

“It was the second year in a row Pollets Martial Arts has won the ISKA Winter Nationals and the team won overall quite comfortably,” Mullins said.

“All six Dubbo people placed and it was good preparation for those going away to America in the selective Australian squad.”
