Mixed results for Warriors

12 Oct, 2009 03:00 AM
Matthew Pietersen’s class shone through as the Western Warriors continued on their winning ways in the Bowlsbet NSW Premier League at the weekend.

The Warriors recorded a clean sweep winning all three rinks against Riverina Rollers in Wagga Wagga yesterday.

As the skip of the Warriors first rink, Pietersen led his side to a 22-11 victory against Shaun Snudden while Paul McKenzie’s rink defeated Bruce Lack 24-15 and Brett Frame held out

Peter Jones 19-15 for a 65 to 41 overall result.

The win ensured the Warriors remained in the mix for a first ever finals appearance with five rounds to play after going down 60 to 46 to Toongabbie Titans at West Dubbo on Saturday.

The Warriors lost two rinks to one in the first match of the weekend double header and it was the in-form Pietersen who provided the only joy, winning his rink over Brett Pritchard.

The St John’s Park-based bowler, who grew up in Parkes, has been a valuable gain for the Warriors this season and his job was made easier on the weekend by team-mates Terry Smith, Richard Clarke and Tim Farrell.

“Matt Pietersen and his whole side bowled well,” Warriors manager Paul Hagarty said.

“On Saturday we led by four shots with nine ends to play but just couldn’t finish it off.

“Toongabbie really jumped on it and finished a lot stronger than we did.

“Fortunately we triumphed against Riverina with everybody bringing their best bowls to the greens.

“That should keep up in a good position in touch with the top end of the table.”

Next weekend the Warriors are on the road to the high flying Raymond Terrace Jets on Saturday before meeting the Mt Lewis Lions in Sydney on Sunday.
