Lew takes honours in final at Peak Hill

15 Sep, 2009 04:00 AM
All honours were with the Mick Lew, Dubbo trained Bundy On Ice in the Peak Hill Ex-Services and Citizens Club Championship Final (1800m) at Peak Hill on Saturday.

The race was set up after the leaders set a break neck pace right from the outset, which saw a fast 1.57.7 mile rate recorded.

Representative junior reinsman Kurt Lew showed the patience required on the sometimes tricky Peak Hill track as he allowed Bundy On Ice ($10.00) to sit right back off the pace in the running line.

Lew then made his winning move with 400m to run and Bundy On Ice swept up to the leaders as they headed into the home straight and went on by to score by five metres.

Brother Brad ($4.00, Colin Young) enjoyed a nice run on the pacemakers backs but could not match Bundy On Ice, chasing him home into second placing while third placed Yellow Roses ($13.00, Peter Hyde) ran out of her skin after she death-seated and went head to head with The Jolly Joker.

The combination of Michael Day Junior and Peter Schiller scored a winning double in the final two races on the program.

Their first winner came up in the Lester Coffee Memorial/Rosewood Stud 3yo Pace (1800m) when King Of Jewels ($2.80) led throughout to win.

Day was allowed to set a very slow pace, one of the slowest ever seen at Peak Hill (2.12.6 mile rating) and this enabled King Of Jewels to have just enough petrol left in the tank to score by a neck.

Favourite for the race, Lose The Blues ($2.00) somehow got bottled up on the pegs in the five-horse field and Ben Settree would surely like to have the drive over again. When his charge got out on the turn, he lost control and Lose The Blues ended up on the outside fence. Revon ($6.50, Andrew Cassell) finished stoutly for third.

Packet Of Crackers ($3.20) completed the double for Day and Schiller in the Central West Agricentre Pace (1800m).

After beginning well, the mare had to be stoked up by Day to cross and lead with 1300 metres to run and from there, he rated her to perfection.

Despite being challenged strongly at the top of the straight, Packet Of Crackers found plenty and got clear again near the line to score by three and a half metres.

We Wonder Why ($3.80, Terry Robb) and Mister Ben (Andrew Cassell) both came from trailing positions and were doing their best as the judge called a holt to proceedings.
