Gunbower duo shoots down opponents

09 May, 2009 04:00 AM
The economy of Gunbower in Victoria is about to receive a boost when Frank Tonn and Terry Gilmore return home with the first prize cheque of $3400 from the Master Pairs tournament that wound up at Dubbo Railway yesterday.

Tonn admits there are only 283 people in the town, about an hour from Bendigo, and the bowling club boasts 35 members.

In the final yesterday, Tonn skipped the winning team to a comprehensive 20-11 win against Dubbo Railway greenkeeper Paul McKenzie and gun shearer Henry Gordon.

Last year the same pair won the Master tournament without losing any of their eight games - they repeated that effort again this week.

Playing great bowls throughout, Tonn completed the final touches winning 13 of the 21 ends including a dream run of six straight ends from seven to 12 when they went from 7-4 up to get away to 16-4.

From that stage it was always going to be tough for McKenzie to pull back the margin.

“To put it simply, they were just too good,” McKenzie said.

“Terry laid the foundations for the win and Frank played brilliant bowls all through.

“Time and time again when we had the advantage Frank would turn things around. They did it all morning.”

Tonn praised organisers of the tournament.

“It’s a great week of bowls here in Dubbo and this time we got the chance to drive around the city. It’s a great place,” he said. “The greens were really good and while we won it again, we needed some luck along the way.

“Consistency was probably the key to our success but we’ve been playing together for a long time.”

Gordon and McKenzie’s share of the $25,000 prize money pool was $1700 while Newcastle bowler Barry Cartwright also had a good week.

He and partner Bill Webb from Asquith picked up the third place cheque of $1300 and Barry purchased the winners in the tournament calcutta on Monday.

He paid $210 for the Tonn ticket, which proved to be worth $1850.

In the Coca-Cola Dash for Cash Consolation which also finished yesterday, Railway’s Greg Collin and Stuart Bayliss from Tamworth won the first prize cheque of $1000.
