Right on the money: Pre-race plan for Arwoc works out for Parsons

24 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
A PRE-RACE plan hatched by trainer Ken Parsons and jockey Kody Nestor to ride Arwoc up on the pace proved to be on the money when the gelding got away for an easy win in the Dubbo Country Trainers Annual Yearling Sale Maiden Plate over 1600 metres yesterday.

While most of the pre-race money was on Greg Ryan’s mount Run Legless, the $2.70 favourite, Cowra based Parsons said the win held no surprises for him.

"He’s been crying out for more ground and this race was ideal for him," he said.

"He’s by Reset and he’s bred to run more ground than what he’s been racing over.

"Unfortunately he didn’t show a real lot, especially in his past two races and he seemed to lack a turn of foot.

"So today we wanted to let him roll forward out of barrier four and try and get a bit of a break on the others and see what happens.

"He did more than that and raced really well."

At the line Arwon had a decisive 6-1/4 lengths over the second placed Hobbs ($5.00) ridden by Rachel Murray for Greg Bennett; while Run Legless - prepared by Luke Griffith at Scone - finished third, more than seven lengths behind the winner and was never going to win.

Parsons said Kody Nestor told him that Arwon had raced a bit keen early in the race.

"He did that at Orange as well, when Mathew Cahill rode him," Parsons said.

"That was another reason why we wanted to have him more forward today.

"You’ve also got to remember this was only his fourth start and hopefully he’ll pull up okay and we can look for another race, maybe one over 200 metres."

Nestor was having his first ride on the gelding and praised the training of Ken Parsons.

"He’s a good horseman and a very good trainer," Nestor said.

"Ken told me how he thought I could ride the horse and he was a bit unsettled for the first three furlongs.

"So I let him roll along and initially I tried to set a soft lead and ‘lead em and rack em’ so to speak.

"But in hindsight I think my decision to let him roll forward and race as he liked was the best way to finish the race off.

"It was an impressive performance."

There were no excuses for the other runners, they were beaten by the much better horse on the day and all honours were with the winner.

The performance of Run Legless was fairly ordinary. Despite the 12 barrier, Ryan had him in a prominent spot early but was shuffled back to near last at the 1100m and at the point was probably 10 lengths from the leader.

At the turn Arwon continued to dictate from in front but when Run Legless started his run on the outside, Nestor had livened up his horse and half way down the straight there didn’t seem to be a danger.
