John McKinnon was quietly confident before Saturday’s Regional Auto Supplies Geurie Cup (1400m) and his six-year-old gelding One Last Shot trotted out with some support in the betting ring.
Riders had inspected the track twice before allowing the meeting to go ahead after a week of rain but organisers, all volunteers, had the track to the jockeys’ satisfaction and racing went ahead.
By the time the big race was ready to go the track had been cut up and was rated in parts a heavy 10 but it seemed to suit One Last Shot ($7) who was nicely positioned early and rounding the turn it stayed on the fence - a place where many jockeys didn’t favour - and it gathered Carry the Dance ($4.40 fav), Orbit ($6) and Snowy On The Tram ($10) in to win impressively by half a length.
Orbit finished second with Carry The Dance a further length away in third place.
For McKinnon the win was a real family affair.
“It was a good win.
“It’s my first Geurie Cup and what makes it better is that my wife Sue owns it.” he said.
Adding to the day for the McKinnon’s, their son Scott is president of the club and the day was a big success all round.
“Thank you Geurie for being a welcoming and passionate community,’’ Sue McKinnon said as the accepted the $2000 first prize and the $200 trophy on offer for the Cup winner.
“The sun is shining and good people have done such hard work.
“I don’t really see the horse much but he did such a terrific job and so did the jockey.”
Saturday’s meeting was Geurie’s second since it was granted permission to race again following a 10-year hiatus.
