While Dubbo’s men’s hockey team the Wanderers are hoping for their second consecutive win in this weekend’s grand final against City, captain-coach Andrew Johnston does not expect the game to be a complete repeat of last years grand final against West when his team dominated 7-1.
Like any grand final should be Johnston said he was expecting it to be a tough one.
“I think we will go in there with a 50-50 chance,” he said.
“So we should have a shot at least.
“It’ll be a pretty solid game so we will have to take our chances.”
The two sides have remained close all season with a 1-all scoreline the result of their last meeting.
The premier league competition has placed many of the opposing players in the same team but goalkeeper Gavin Weekes said everything will be put a side on game day.
“I guess you could liken it to the rivalry between Macquarie and CYMS,” he said.
“We hate each other with a passion on the field and are mates off the field.”
The Wanderers have been lucky in that their preparations for the big game have been free of any major hiccups.
“We will have all hands on deck,” Johnston said.
“Nathan Morris will not be available but we have enough numbers so that won’t effect us greatly.”
Johnston who plays in the fullback position said the team would be particularly counting on Gavin Weekes in goal, Matt Waters in the centres and Mick Lane up front.
But he said the team would be on the lookout for any dangerous traits in the opposition.
“They are pretty strong up front,” he said.
“If we can shut them down in defence hopefully our forwards can do the job for us.”
