This year’s Country Energy Western Premier League is looking to be a good one for the Dubbo Crows, with training starting tonight at 6pm at the Dubbo Hockey Complex.
The team have been working on their fitness since the end of January, with a good show of numbers turning up, which gives incumbent Coach Andrew Johnston some selection headaches ahead of season kick-off on April 17.
“It’s good to see a lot of younger guys coming to training, guys like Angus Ray and Hunter Medcalf who have shown good form last year in the junior ranks and are about ready to make the transition into the big league,” he said.
The only changes look to be the possible departure of Mark McKenzie, who suffered from knee injuries last year, and Patrick Mould, who is studying at Charles Sturt University in Bathurst. But both will still play when needed .
Debutants from last year Stuart McKenzie, Jack Eckford and David Hurst will look too build from last year after showing some good form.
Ben Myhill, will make his debut this year after moving from Tamworth. As an older head he will give the Crows a bit more stability in the midfield.
This also looks to be the last year for both player and coach Michael Lane and Andrew Johnston, who have been the heart and soul of the Crows.
This should give the team added incentive to perform well to give these boys a good send off.
Leading the Crows through the season will be Matthew Waters, who last year was given the honour of captaining the team.
Helping skipper Waters will be key players Samuel Mould returning in the forward line, with Phillip Coffee who missed last year’s season, Nathan Morris and Matthew Edwards in the backline with Gavin Weekes in the net.
Entering their 10th year in the competition the Dubbo Crows wouldn’t be able to compete without the great support from their sponsors, The Amaroo Hotel, The Athletes Foot and new sponsor for 2010 AXXIS ComWorld.
Any players keen on playing for the Crows this year, are invited to attend training tonight and have a go.
