Taylor’s pursuit of victory

04 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
Andrew Taylor has vowed to bounce back from a fifth placing in the Scratch Race at the Australian Track Championships yesterday to push for honours with his New South outfit in the Teams Pursuit event tomorrow.

The 24-year-old Dubbo Cycle Club member will team with Paul Fellows and Peter Lewis and considers his chances as ‘good.’

Taylor yesterday confessed he ‘didn’t have the legs’ to get better than fifth in his first race at the titles in Adelaide.

West Australian Scott Sutherland proved too strong for Taylor in a quarter-final of the men’s 299 metres Sprint Race.

“I raced Scott in the Adelaide Grand Prix not so long ago and he got me that time as well,” Taylor said yesterday.

“His advantage is he can go a kilometre out but I don’t have that same kick.

“While I felt really good I just didn’t have the legs at the finish.

“Finishing fifth overall is okay but probably not as good as what I expected.

“I’m now looking forward to the Teams Pursuit on Friday and I think we’ve got a really good chance of winning it.”

Beijing Olympian Daniel Ellis from the ACT is Taylor’s tip for the final with his opponent to be either Sunderland, Jason Niblett (Vic) or Alex Bird (ACT) who all won quarter-finals.

In the sprint qualifying on Tuesday night Taylor was seventh fastest at 10.629s, with Ellis on the top with 10.2666.

In the first sudden-death first round Taylor (11.066) eliminated ACT’s Gary Ryan before going under to Sunderland.

Dubbo’s World Junior champion Megan Dunn was to open her championship campaign last night with her pet event, the 20-kilometre Under-19s pointscore.

She is a raging hot favourite for the straight out final having won the World Cup in Beijing just over a fortnight ago.
