Dunn, Taylor’s Commonwealth Games prospects enhanced

08 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
No gold medals for Dubbo riders Megan Dunn and Andrew Taylor at the Australian Championships in Adelaide over the weekend, but never-the-less results that will hold them in good shape for Commonwealth Games selection.

Competing in her first elite women’s division, Dunn started with a third placing for bronze in the Points Race despite having a fall and missing one of the sprints.

Then on the weekend she picked up silver when second in the 10km Scratch Race.

A very fit and determined Andrew Taylor said yesterday his two medals in the Team Sprint and Keirin were pleasing and that he was looking forward to a break before tuning into the camps leading up to Commonwealth Games selection.

“It’s been a good week and I’m happy to find myself not too far off the mark in both my medal finals,” he said.

“Our New South Wales ride in the Team Sprint was good. We finished second behind the ACT team in the qualification and we finished second behind them in the final.

“They were the favourites and to get within two tenths of a second was pleasing.”

Taylor teamed up with Paul Fellows and Peter Lewis in the race and went 46.716 and a 57.80kmph in qualifying behind the ACT’s Alex Bird, Daniel Ellis and Gary Ryan (46.187) and 48.46km/h.

The ante was upped in the final when the winners went 46.215 and 58.42 to Taylor’s 46.456 and 58.12.

Taylor finished fourth in his heat of the Keirin won by Jason Niblett (Victoria) which meant he had to get through the second round to earn a place in the final.

He did without too much trouble but in the final it was to WA’s Scott Sunderland the winner, with Daniel Ellis (ACT) getting the silver medal and Taylor third.

As expected Megan Dunn was determined in the women’s 10km Scratch Race.

She had recovered from her fall earlier in the week and despite making the first move and leading the sprint was just touched out in the last bit by gold medal winner Belinda Goss from Tasmania. Dunn’s NSW team-mate Ashlee Ankudinoff was third.

“It was a great race,” Andrew Taylor said.

“Megan went into the race determined to win as she always does but just failed to pull it off.”

The race wasn’t without its dramas when race favourite Sarah Kent (WA) was disqualified. Race officials ruled that she had deliberately rode on the blue band (inside) during the race.
