Dubbo’s Megan Dunn has won gold, silver and bronze at the Australian Road Cycling Championships held at Ballarat, which were held during the past five days.
Competing in combined under-23 and open races, Dunn finished third overall in the Women’s Criterium on Thursday to claim silver in the Women’s Under-23 division and then finished seventh in the Women’s Road Race on Saturday.
This handed her the under-23 gold medal.
Dunn, 18, arrived in Ballarat last week fresh from finishing third overall in the four-day Jayco Bay Series Cycling Classic in Geelong.
The points she earned during that series helped her Jayco VIC/NSW IS team also win bronze in the team overall classification event.
In the 33km, 30-lap Women’s Criterium on Thursday a brave solo attack midway through the race proved a winning move for 24-year-old South Australian Carly Light who claimed her maiden Australian title crown.
Numerous attempts to bridge the gap were made by Australian Under-23 time trial champion Josephine Tomic and pointscore specialist Belinda Goss, but Light maintained her advantage to win by almost 300 metres.
Canberra’s Chloe Hosking narrowly edged out Dunn in a bunch sprint to the line for second place and in the process claimed the Under-23 gold medal.
Bay Series winner Rochelle Gilmore finished fourth, Goss fifth and Victoria’s Peta Mullens (6th across the line) took bronze in the under-23s.
“The best training is racing so to get a couple of medals fills me with confidence,” Dunn said.
“It is great to see how women’s racing is developing. There is such a great bunch of young women coming through right now.
“You only have to see how many under-23s there are in the top of the results.”
The difficult course combined with hot conditions saw just 23 out of the 43 starters finish the criterium race, while in the road race it was a similar story with just 29 out of 71 starters finishing.
32-year-old Townsville mother of two Ruth Corset won the Women’s Road Race in searing heat and gusting winds after breaking away on the 10th and final lap of the 102km journey.
Three riders bridged the gap and in a gruelling finish Corset won 18 seconds ahead of Victorian Bridie O’Donnell with Germany’s Judith Arndt third.
“It was very hard,” Corset said.
“The last few laps I was throwing up and couldn’t hold anything down.”
“That last lap my legs were cramping but I just gritted my teeth.”
Dunn was 1 minute 57 seconds behind the winner for seventh overall and gold in the under-23 classification while South Australia’s Tiffany Cromwell (10th overall) took silver and Loren Roney (15th) the bronze.
