The tarmac around No.1 Oval will be sizzling today when some of the best junior and senior track cyclists in Australia compete in the Dubbo Open Carnival.
About 130 cyclists will converge on the track vying for prize money in 60 events.
In the junior events Dubbo will be putting up a host of state and national level medalists in a bid to protect the spoils from visiting competitors from Tamworth, Wagga, Bathurst, the Central Coast, Sydney, Wollongong and Inverell.
“In the Under-11 boys we have Luke Ensor and Kurt Eather who should do very well,” Dubbo Cycle Club president Michael Coffee said.
“Josh Dunn is in the Under-13 boys and Courtney Granger in the Under-13 girls.
“Under-15 girls Meg Coffee and Emma Apolony are both State champions, and each won a wheel race in the recent two-day carnival at Wagga.
“Sam Coffee will be one to watch in the Under-15 boys and Aaron Wilmott in the Under-17 boys.
“Rebecca Dunn is Megan Dunn’s cousin and is an Australian champion and a real talent following in Megan’s footsteps. As a 16-year-old Rebecca won the women’s open wheel race at Wagga and she will be hard to beat in the Under-17 girls.”
Divisions start from Under-9s right through to opens with scratch, handicap and keirin events on the program.
Racing starts at 2pm with a feast of action going into the evening with the last event being the O’Donnell’s Pharmacy 20-lap scratch race in which prize money will be awarded to the leader of each of the final 10 laps.
“We normally hold our open carnival in conjunction with the State titles which are held here in March every year,” Coffee said.
“For a one-day carnival we are very pleased with the number of entries on Saturday.
“The whole carnival is sponsored by Western Plains Automotive and it is interesting to point out that cycling is one of the few junior sports that still race for money.”
