Dubbo’s Whitney Cup first grade final three is all but decided following washouts of the second day’s play in round 12 on Saturday.
Going into the round Colts (95.27 points) had the minor premiership tied up and a free passage into the grand final on March 27-28 while Souths (81.94) were also assured of second place with only Rugby (75.78) and CYMS (67.48) left to fight out for the third and last place.
None of the three games had decisions after the first day although Macquarie (8-385) had the wood on Newtown (0-23) while Rugby put 275 in the bank with CYMS to bat.
The third game saw Souths defending just 136 against Colts (0-55).
A feature of that first day was a magnificent innings from Jason Green (Macquarie) with 200 not out.
We now move into a one-day round this Saturday with Colts to play Macquarie. Newtown are against Rugby and Souths come up against CYMS.
This will then leave two two-day games before the finals.
On February 20 and 27 Souths get a shot at Newtown, Colts play CYMS and Rugby meet Macquarie.
The final games on March 6 and 13 feature Colts and Rugby, CYMS and Newtown and Souths and Macquarie.
The preliminary final is on the weekend of March 20-21 and the grand final the following weekend.
Pinnington and Kelly cups minor grades were also washed out on Saturday.
Two teams gained first innings points after the first day.
In second grade Pinnington Cup third placed Macquarie (7-127 declared) chased down Newtown’s first innings of 93 with The Town 1-28 in their second visit to the crease.
The top three is virtually decided now with Souths (92.32), Colts (88.25) and Macquarie (80.46) the contenders.
In Kelly Cup third grade CYMS enhanced their chances of getting into the top three when they earned points against third placed Rugby - Rugby out for 76 and the Blues 4-127 at stumps on day one.
Before the round Rugby (68.97) were behind Souths (112.45) and Newtown (83.03) with CYMS in the hunt with 62.55 points. Obviously the next three rounds will be important in this grade.
