Tigers tighten the screws on Cougars

Tigers tighten the screws on Cougars

06 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
Newtown has put itself in a strong position to claim outright points in its Whitney Cup clash with CYMS at No.2 Oval as the Cougars season continues to go from bad to worse.

Steve Skinner was a proud captain on Saturday night as his side rallied from being bowled out for just 108 in their first innings to holding a 125-run lead at the completion of day one.

Batting first after losing the toss, Newtown was undone by a fine spell of bowling from Darryl Thompson. who took 5-28 off 8.4 overs to restrict the Tigers to just 108.

Skinner and Warrick Finlay were the best of the Newtown batsmen, each making 30.

With their confidence up after a stellar effort in the field, the 10-man CYMS side would have been expected to give first innings points a shake.

But what followed was a collapse of the most disappointing kind as they lost 7-6 after Ian Redpath departed with the score on 25 to be all out for just 31 in just 12.4 overs.

Redpath’s knock of 18 was the only thing that stopped CYMS from being embarrassed even further.

Mat Skinner, who battled severe shin splints to play, was the star with the ball and took 6-14 off 6.4 overs.

Newtown finished the day on 2-48 in their second innings and Skinner admitted his side will try and bat CYMS out of the contest when day two is played this Saturday.

“I’m expecting that the pitch will be better next week so hopefully we can bat to a point where we set them too high a target and give ourselves plenty of time to bowl them out,” he said.

“I would have liked 30 or 40 more when we batted the first time but as it turned out it was more than enough.

“It’s unfortunate for them but we can’t feel sorry for them too much. We want to win games and give ourselves a chance to make the finals.

“The good thing for us was that we didn’t have to spend too long in the field.

“Mat has been battling pretty bad shin splints. They’re almost stress fractures and to only need a short spell and get him resting up again was a good resultSteve Skinner was a proud captain on Saturday night as his side rallied from being bowled out for just 108 in their first innings to holding a 125-run lead at the completion of day one.

Good to see that you make a comment like that while not putting your name to it.

Fantastic to see the effort from the CYMS boys after being put back in the field, would have been easy to drop your heads, but instead the effort was still 100% and if a couple of dicessions had gone the other way you never know what might have happened next week, in fact we still dont know.

Keep your heads up boys, CYMS will be back, i have no doubt about it.

The level of cricket in all grades would be much stronger if Dubbo didn't have to sustain 6 teams. CYMS could only feild 10 men on Saturday. A disgrace.

Souths only had 7 men in 3rd grade week before - we should get rid of them too. 4 team comp - would be so strong!! Accept no one would want to play the same team every other week and we'd be left with no comp at all...

Bathurst cricket might not be as strong as Dubbo's but it got a hell of a lot stronger when it withdrew from the Bathurst-Orange comp, and promoted three second grade sides into firsts along with the three already there. Taking out teams might seem like a good idea to improve the overall quality but the damage done to those left disenchanted because their club no longer has a side, plus the reduction in numbers of players exposed to good cricket easily offsets the benefits.

If The comp is so weak why doesnt strengthen dubbo cricket go and play for CYMS to make it stronger.

Lets see... every new player that looks like coming to town gets snaffled by the super club. Go thru their teams in all grades and look at all the new names to town they have taken. The DDCA has 5 members of the super club on the executive.... need I go on. When people get their heads out of the sand and ensure that ALL new players to town are given the opportunity to play for the not so strong clubs then Dubbo cricket will go ahead. Both Rugby and Souths only had up to 8 players in a 3rd grade game 2 weekends ago... lets kick them both out... what a stupid comment by Strengthen Dubbo Cricket!
