Newtown has put itself in a strong position to claim outright points in its Whitney Cup clash with CYMS at No.2 Oval as the Cougars season continues to go from bad to worse.
Steve Skinner was a proud captain on Saturday night as his side rallied from being bowled out for just 108 in their first innings to holding a 125-run lead at the completion of day one.
Batting first after losing the toss, Newtown was undone by a fine spell of bowling from Darryl Thompson. who took 5-28 off 8.4 overs to restrict the Tigers to just 108.
Skinner and Warrick Finlay were the best of the Newtown batsmen, each making 30.
With their confidence up after a stellar effort in the field, the 10-man CYMS side would have been expected to give first innings points a shake.
But what followed was a collapse of the most disappointing kind as they lost 7-6 after Ian Redpath departed with the score on 25 to be all out for just 31 in just 12.4 overs.
Redpath’s knock of 18 was the only thing that stopped CYMS from being embarrassed even further.
Mat Skinner, who battled severe shin splints to play, was the star with the ball and took 6-14 off 6.4 overs.
Newtown finished the day on 2-48 in their second innings and Skinner admitted his side will try and bat CYMS out of the contest when day two is played this Saturday.
“I’m expecting that the pitch will be better next week so hopefully we can bat to a point where we set them too high a target and give ourselves plenty of time to bowl them out,” he said.
“I would have liked 30 or 40 more when we batted the first time but as it turned out it was more than enough.
“It’s unfortunate for them but we can’t feel sorry for them too much. We want to win games and give ourselves a chance to make the finals.
“The good thing for us was that we didn’t have to spend too long in the field.
“Mat has been battling pretty bad shin splints. They’re almost stress fractures and to only need a short spell and get him resting up again was a good resultSteve Skinner was a proud captain on Saturday night as his side rallied from being bowled out for just 108 in their first innings to holding a 125-run lead at the completion of day one.
