CYMS haven’t enjoyed the best of seasons on the field in 2011-12 but club stalwart Paul Suckling hopes comments made about the club on the Daily Liberal website this week can fire up their Whitney Cup side.
In last Monday’s Liberal it was reported how the Cougars were dismissed for just 31 in their first grade clash against Newtown and while the task facing them on day two of their match appears quite large Suckling, who now plays second grade alongside his son Corey, believes it will be a determined side that takes to the field.
After last Monday’s story a number of readers made remarks about the club on the dailyliberal.com.au website which drew the ire of Suckling, who has been involved heavily with the club for a number of years and said it was disappointing to read such comments.
“Really it should be water off a duck’s back, especially when a lot of people didn’t bother to put their real names on the comments,” the former club president said.
“All these people seem to have ideas but nody is really willing to step up and help out.
“A lot of time and effort goes into the running of any club. Ours is no different and what happened last week was disappointing.
“Last week we had a young guy who was named in the team and couldn’t get in from out of town so we had to go with 10 because we had already declared our team.
“One of our new guys, Peter Rothwell, also put a couple of comments on the website and it is good to see that kind of passion from a guy that has only been with us for a couple of weeks.”
Newtown will resume on 2-48 in their second innings on Saturday, a lead 125 runs and with 75 overs to play, it would take something phenomenal from the Cougars to turn the match around.
But Suckling said he would love to see a fight, especially given the controversy of the past week.
“Nobody likes to be in the situation we are in at the moment and the boys are out there doing their best.
“They will be hurting a bit so hopefully they can come out and make a good game of it.”
