Rugby and Colts to play for Danny Bower trophy

28 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
RUGBY captain Jordan Moran will put aside a recurring hand injury in order to play in his side’s Whitney Cup clash with RSL-Colts at Lady Cutler Oval on Sunday.

The two clubs will do battle in both first and second grade, with the Danny Bower Cup up for grabs.

Bower was one of Dubbo’s best cricketers and a life member of the Rugby club before he tragically died in a skydiving accident in May 2009.

Since then, whenever Rugby and Colts have met on club day it has been for the trophy named in his honour.

“I only got to play with Danny for about three years but in those three years I saw how much he did for the club and his mates that he played cricket with and against,” Moran said.

“I’ve never actually played in one of these Danny Bower Cup matches before so I’m pretty keen to get out there, regardless of my hand.”

Moran broke bones in his hand while playing rugby for Narromine last season and only returned to cricket after the Christmas break.

But he received a blow early in his innings against Souths last Saturday that has caused him some major discomfort this week.

“I got hit in about the fifth over and I’ve basically done nothing with it all week,” he said.

“We had a training run this week and I just watched and I’ll probably need a painkiller to play but I’d like to be out there.

“It’s Danny Bower Cup and we are also trying to take second place off Macquarie and we need to keep winning to do that.”

Rugby will need to be at their best if they are to roll the seven-time defending champions but Moran is confident his side can put up a strong performance.

And he has some gameplans in mind to try and bring Colts undone.

“The weather over the next couple of days will play a roll but I think to beat Colts you need to put scoreboard pressure on them so I’d love to win the toss and bat first,” he said.

“I’m thinking about opening the batting myself and trying to play an innings that revolves around still being there in the last over.

“If that is the case then it means some other guys have hung around with me and we should have a good score on the board and then the pressure will be on them to chase the runs.

Maybe Moran needs to get down to Bunnings and buy some cement and toughen up a bit

Comments like that bigman might explain why cricketers and people in this town don't like you and your club.

At least Jordan has some integrity and work ethic to help all clubs and towns in this region improve the skills of their juniors and not put other clubs down behind their backs
