Souths will be aiming for their first Whitney Cup title win since the 2003-04 season, after ending the hopes of Rugby yesterday in the preliminary final played at No.1 Oval.
On the back of 84 from Rod Morrison, a half-century by Jarrod Simpson and 40 from Aaron Etcell, Souths finished the first day on 7-278.
Colwell yesterday saw his bowlers get the job done with Rugby out for 134 in 37 overs. This now sets up a grand final next weekend between Souths and RSL-Colts who will be aiming for their sixth first grade title in as many seasons.
Rugby yesterday continued their fairytale charge for second grade honours beating RSL-Colts by three wickets at No.2 Oval. Rugby chased down the 115 needed for victory, getting home seven wickets down thanks to a stubborn knock of 26 not out by skipper Bill North.
The third grade match between Newtown and CYMS was a real thriller. On Saturday Newtown came back from 9-103 to get 193 with Ben Hunt and Andrew Merchant the heroes.
But in the eight overs before stumps CYMS hit back with two quick wickets.
Yesterday Newtown again got on top and had CYMS 9-120 before Brian Carroll and Shae Stone crept closer and closer but the game ended when Stone was bowled with total at 171.
