Medway hoping results will turn Blues’ way

28 Nov, 2009 03:00 AM
Macquarie may be sitting last on the Whitney Cup ladder but according to their captain Dan Medway their season is far from finished.

The Blues will be fighting to keep in touch with the top sides when they clash with Newtown today in a round 7 one-day game.

Medway sees it as a game they need to win.

“We haven’t got the wins but the attitude from the boys is still positive and energetic and I think it’s time our fortunes turned around,” he said.

“I certainly don’t think that we’ve been playing poor cricket, we’re just not getting the results we deserve.

“The batting throughout has been pretty good and I’m hoping that will continue on Saturday.

“Obviously we need to take more wickets and with a bit more luck that will eventually happen.

“But because of our position on the competition ladder, the next win can’t come soon enough.”

Medway pointed out that young Yeoval quick Jacob Harvey was due for wickets, having showed plenty of pace.

There is also plenty of promise in young guys Dan Holland and Mick Lewin - Lewin having earned Western Zone selection for the Bradman Cup Under-16s series in the New Year.

“Mick’s been getting some good top-order wickets with his off spin and Ed Haylock has also got a spot in the top side with leg spin, so we’ve got some nice variety,” Medway said.

The skipper himself is also a noted wicket taker with his off spin and together with the experienced Country Blues all rounder Chris Sargent, they seem to have the arsenal to get sides out.

Medway also conceded that the unavailability of quick Jeremy Dickson hadn’t helped the side.

Dickson is a quality player but after turning out in the first two games hasn’t been able to commit himself there after.

Forced to chase 400 to win against CYMS last week, the Blues put in a mighty effort being out for 280 after Harvey (56) and Joe Haylock (71no) mounted a rear guard fight back that eventually fell well short of the mark.

Newtown also go into the game as last start losers.

Like Macquarie they also needed 400 plus to get a look in but were out for a mere 148.

They will need to do better today.

Matt Finlay’s performance with the bat for Souths will be watched with interest when they play Colts in the Whitney Cup match of the day today.

After making 54, 66, 119 Finlay’s batting has gone luke warm in recent weeks with 20 against Macquarie and then a duck when they played Rugby last game.

There should be a lot of runs scored in this game with Brad Cox coming off a massive 181 against Newtown and Josh Smith, Nathan Jones and Wes Giddings all middling the ball well for Colts.

John Colwell’s 61no was very good for Souths against Rugby with Mark O’Donnell (40) and Tim Berry (42) also getting solid starts.

Don’t be surprised to see Ian Redpath make big runs for CYMS against Rugby.

The former Northern Territory all rounder was there for just one scoring shot (six) against Macquarie but looked to have the arsenal to threaten with 38no in the Twenty/20 game Friday night.

CYMS will be without Sam Pararajasingham for this game being on duty with Western Zone on the central coast, but who could forget Jaspal Bansal’s massive 206 last time at the crease.

Rugby on the other hand started the season on fire but have stalled with a couple of losses, despite captain Nathan Munro getting runs.

Having Jordan Moran on rep duty won’t help their chances.
