To win today Macquarie and Newtown could quite possibly have to do something that has never been achieved in Dubbo cricket - chase down a total in excess of 400 runs.
Both teams fell victim to master class batting last Saturday with former India Under-19 international Jaspal Bansal scoring 206 for CYMS against Macquarie at Lady Cutler 3 and former Australian Under-15 international Brad Cox scoring 181 for RSL-Colts against Newtown at No.2 Oval.
Both batsmen were ably supported by their team-mates and as a result CYMS scored 8 for 407 and Colts 9 for 400.
In order to win, Macquarie and Newtown would have to maintain a run rate higher than 5.3 per over for the full 75-over duration.
Without Jason Green one could expect a youthful Macquarie side, who are still searching for their first win of the season, will find that task virtually impossible.
Meanwhile Newtown, who are up against the competition leaders, will need big games from openers Wayne Dunlop and Jordan Peacock as well as guys like Mat Skinner - who scores his runs quickly - to spend plenty of time at the crease.
Three years ago, when Dubbo qualified for the SCG Country Cup finals, Jason Green scored 174 as Dubbo posted 9 for 421 in a 50-over fixture against Bathurst at No.1 Oval.
But in terms of chasing, has it been done?
In international cricket, only South Africa have successfully chased a total higher than 400 in One Day Internationals when they scored 9 for 438 in 49.5 overs chasing Australia’s 4 for 434 at Johannesburg in 2006.
In Tests, it has only been done four times, including the two highest being against Australia this decade, with West Indies the highest scoring 7 for 418 against Australia in 2003 and South Africa 4 for 414 in Perth last year.
