Karina Judd urged Dubbo youths to get involved in the community and not to be afraid to ask for help if they need it, when she accepted her 2010 Young Australian of the Year award yesterday.
The dedicated community member who chairs the Dubbo City Youth Council is a member of Rotaract, the Dubbo Theatre Company and an active leader of the East Dubbo Sunset Guides.
She was recognised for her contributions to the community during the Australia Day ceremony in Victoria Park.
Ms Judd said she was “honoured” to receive the award and thanked Dubbo City Council and the youth council.
After the Australia Day ambassador’s speech, Ms Judd said she agreed that it was important to ask for help if you needed it.
“Everyone needs help sometimes,” she said.
Ms Judd has taken part in projects including national youth week activities, youth consultation surveys and the youth café.
She was also selected to represent Australia at Girl Guiding New Zealand’s National Young Leader’s Event and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts Leadership development Seminar, held in India in February this year.
She achieved the Queen’s Guide Award, which required her to complete challenges in a variety of areas including leadership, teamwork, outdoors, international awareness, guiding history and active service to the community.
“Karina’s many contributions to the Dubbo community makes her a very worthy recipient of the 2010 Young Citizen of the Year,” a Dubbo City Council spokesperson said.
