Stage set for city's newest attraction as Mayor gets keys to Dubbo theatre

11 Mar, 2010 04:28 PM
Seven years ago, the Daily Liberal ran an article asking what sort of town Dubbo was. "They challenged us. They gave us a task… Task complete," Mayor Allan Smith said yesterday after receiving the keys to the Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre.

Cr Smith received the keys from building contractor David Payne taking official ownership of the first completed A Class, full size theatre to use steel a frame and tilt panel wall construction in the world.

"After nearly 30 years of debating, finally Dubbo has a tiered theatre – this is a great moment in the city’s history," Cr Smith said.

"On Tuesday August 26 2003, the Daily Liberal ran an article and carried it on the front page of the paper. The headline was ‘What sort of town is this?’ Big question. The sub-headline read ‘No museum, no art gallery, no theatre, no council headquarters, no football grandstand…and now a leading library.’ They challenged us. They gave us a task… Task complete."

A proud project manager, Mick Wilson, took the media for a walk through of the centre yesterday.

"This theatre construction cost 13 and a half million, Port Macquarie cost 50 million, down south cost 30 million and they’ve got no better than us," he said.

More than 90 per cent of subcontractors employed during construction of the theatre were local to the central west and more than $3.5 million worth of material for the project was purchased locally, Cr Smith said.

Dubbo Artz president Leonie Ward presented the mayor with a cheque for $150,000, paying for the tiered seating.

"We’re very, very excited and thrilled that this amazing venue is now officially part of the Dubbo venues on offer," Ms Ward said.

"It’s been a long, hard road. For 10 years I’ve been involved in the lobbying."

Surely its not finished? The air conditioning ducts and plant rooms are visible from all angles, it looks like some sort of industrial process plant.

So they've built it, but will anyone come (after the first month or two)?

I can't believe the attitude of the knockers. From what I can see it's a beautiful building. I cant wait to attend a show there and thanks to everyone that made it happen, Ignore the negativity and be proud of what you've achieved :)

Congratulations Dubbo on finally having a professional theatre available. For too long the city had to make do with the Civic Centre and other locations. Now it is likely that touring productions will come to Dubbo and make it easier for locals to see shows, keep money in Dubbo and also bring in additional funds. Here's hoping that local theatre and dance companies get some use too!

So james you want to spend 10s of $1,000.00 to cover the fire air extractors. Which I hope are never used. By the way the plant room and airconditioning ducts are mostly under the building.

The building looks great. Whilst I'm not into the Arts, it has to be a great thing for those who are. Hopefully more projects like this in the future.

Dubbo and Western people - Get behind this wonderful asset! Have a look at the best on-line booking system I've seen and book tickets to a show - the prices are cheap and the variety of shows is fantastic! My only worry is that the white!! pebbles at the front will end up all over Dubbo (like the blue stuff at the Cultural Centre) and that the plants will die of heat stress in amongst them - my only very small criticism! Congratulations to Dubbo City Council Councillors & Staff, Dubbo Artz, construction companies and workers, and all involved in making this a reality for our Region!

I think they could nickname it "The Watch House", as a double reference to being able to watch the theater and also a reference to one of the towns oldest tourist attractions the Old Duboo Goal (and I think that from the top of it you would just about be able to see the goal, so it really is watching over it). What do you think?
