Speed limit change in CBD quashed

Speed limit change in CBD quashed

04 Nov, 2009 03:00 AM
The Dubbo Chamber of Commerce and Industry has greeted a decision not to adopt a 40km/h speed limit in the city’s centre with enthusiasm.

Chamber lobby group chairwoman Leanne O’Sullivan said the decision by Dubbo City Council was “sensible”.

“While we support pedestrian safety, our members thought (the motion) was unnecessary, not needed and the money could have been better spent elsewhere,” she said.

Dubbo councillors opted not to lower the speed limit at Monday night’s council meeting in a six to five decision.

Council had approved the 40km/h motion at its September meeting in a vote where the mayor used his casting vote, but Cr Ann Barnard was an apology at the meeting.

Cr Shields, one of the authors of the rescission motion, said major accidents were occurring outside the central business district, and the public was opposed to the 40km/h speed restriction.

He raised concerns about the number of speed zones within the city limits.

Cr Lyn Griffiths was strongly in favour of reducing the speed in an area bounded by Bligh, Cobra, Darling, Talbragar streets and part of the northern extension of Macquarie Street to Erskine Street.

Cr Greg Matthews had a “pragmatic approach”, which saw him support the 40km/h change in an attempt to make the RTA and not ratepayers pay for it. Crs Ben Shields, Tina Reynolds, Keith Harris, Mathew Dickerson, Peter Bartley and Ann Barnard supported the rescission motion.

40 kph is pretty much a standard speed for the CBD anyway (as has been discuessed before). You'd be better off educating drivers not to jam up the roundabouts when traffic is at a standstill in Macqaurie Street and not to drive through the Stop sign at the end of Talbragar Street. Very annoying habits.

Finally, a town with commonsense!! 40km/hour is ridiculously slow and unecessary. In fact, no-one can deny the world was a better place when EVERYONE knew it was 60km/h in town and 100kn/h out of town. Simple, effective, successful. No-one profits from the multitude of differing limits other than the government, sign-makers and panel-beaters! Bring back common sense!!

Congratulations must go to Matthew Dickerson for crossing the floor and voting for ommon sense. Thank heavens we have Ben Shields on the council sticking up for whats right. 40 kms an hour is just too slow and would cost alot of money and achieve nothing. It's good to see Ben, the councillor who wins the most votes at the council elections, actually win a vote in council for once. Keep up the good work Cr Dickerson.
