Small movements give hope to walking dream

31 Jul, 2010 04:00 AM
A young Dubbo apprentice electrician paralysed in an horrific motocross accident is inspiring huge support with his determination to walk again.

Jesse Rutherford suffered catastrophic neck and spinal injuries when he was thrown over the handlebars of his motorcycle at 80km/h during a competition event at Dunedoo on May 2.

Airlifted to Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital, the 20-year-old underwent multiple surgeries, testing and treatment before starting an intensive therapy program.

Jesse was transferred to the Royal Rehabilitation Centre at the end of July and hopes to return to Dubbo as early as October.

Close-knit family and friends are rallying behind Jesse and his parents, Reece Rutherford and Wendy Rawson, by staging a charity auction at the Macquarie Inn from 6pm on August 28.

The aim is to help meet the cost of specific home renovations, a light-weight manual wheelchair and other special equipment to accommodate Jesse’s condition and facilitate his rehabilitation.

The “Bring Jesse Home” fundraiser is being generously supported by the Dubbo business community.

Organising committee members are asking for goods suitable for auction, monetary donations and raffle prizes.

The fundraiser will feature Dubbo band At The Bar, a sausage sizzle, auction, chocolate wheel and raffles.

Admission of $15 per head will include the chance to win a lucky door prize.

“Jesse is maintaining a strong positive and prayerful attitude,’’ grandmother Wendy Goodlet said.

“He is determined to walk again and his progress seems very encouraging.

“Jesse experienced some movement two weeks ago and proudly demonstrated the ability to bend his toes. There was more good news on the weekend when Jesse was able to lift both feet off the floor.

“There is a long way to go but we all remain positive and hopeful. Jesse is working hard during rehabilitation sessions. His lower body is being stimulated and exercised and programs also endeavour to increase upper body strength to make movement from chair to bed easier.

“We are thankful that Jesse has the use of his arms and encourage him to work at his own pace. Healing will be progressive but he will need some assistance.’’
