A 21-year-old male was airlifted to Orange Base Hospital yesterday after suffering neck and shoulder injuries when his semi-trailer collided with a B-double on the Newell highway, north of Peak Hill.
At about 8am yesterday emergency services were called out to the collision that occurred less than one kilometre from the township of Peak Hill.
On arrival they found the driver of the semi-trailer trapped inside his rig and requiring medical treatment to an injury to his shoulder and neck.
Ambulance crews also suspected the man may have sustained head injuries in the crash as he was having confusing conversations with medical staff.
The 30-year-old driver of the B-double managed to free himself from his vehicle, suffering only minor injuries.
Yesterday Ambulance Media confirmed that the driver of the semi was of a larger build and required assistance in freeing himself from his vehicle.
Rescue crews and fire brigade officers worked for some time to free the man who was then airlifted to Orange by NSW Ambulance Rescue Chopper 21.
The driver of the B-double was treated for minor injuries at the scene, but declined to be conveyed to hospital.
Inspector for Parkes Local Area Command, David Cooper, said the road was closed to traffic for approximately 45 minutes while the man was transferred from his truck to the chopper, banking up traffic back to the edge of the town. The wreckage from the vehicles was cleared some time around midday.
Investigations into the cause of the collision are continuing.
