Instead of being pulled over for doing the wrong thing on our roads over the next four weeks police will be complimenting P-platers who are doing the right thing.
In a joint initiative thought up by South Dubbo Rotary and supported by ZooFM and many local businesses the P-plater Good Driving Campaign will be headed by local police Senior Constables Nina Morris and Jason Bush.
Police will pull up five “good” drivers each day, award them with a certificate for their driving and pass their details onto ZooFM. The drivers will go in the running to win a daily prize announced on ZooFM
and their name will also go
in the draw to win the major prize.
Dubbo South Rotarian Tom Breen said the idea of the campaign was to send a message to young drivers that there are good P-platers out there who can be used as role models.
“Already we have had strong interest from other towns such as Wellington and Dunedoo to use this initiative as a template,” he said.
“With people embracing it, it could be the forerunner for an even wider type of thing.”
Dubbo P-plater Irissa Poga said it was encouraging to see police trying to work with P-platers.
“I think it is a good thing ... I don’t like how there is such a generalisation that people think you’re irresponsible because you’re a P-plater,” she said.
“But to be honest, I don’t think this will really make much of a difference to how P-platers drive.”
Ms Poga, 22, said she felt like people automatically assumed she was a bad driver because she was on her Ps.
“People from a range of ages can be on their Ps, not just teenagers,” she said.
The final prize will be awarded to one lucky male and female driver to attend a defensive driving course at St Ives in Sydney.
