Pledge made to city’s ratepayers

21 Nov, 2009 03:00 AM
The executive of a new Dubbo ratepayers group has pledged to lend an ear and a helping hand to all residents and hold the city’s councillors to account.

Dubbo Rural and Suburban Residents and Ratepayers Association inaugural president Juliet Duffy and treasurer Sam Peacocke yesterday spoke enthusiastically about what the group could achieve for the city, as its membership reached the 160 mark.

While they show a can-do attitude, president of rival organisation the Dubbo Ratepayers and Residents Association (DRRA) Greg Mohr says the new association is yet to put the “runs on the board”.

On Thursday night the association started itself with a flourish, unveiling a website, patrons and business support.

Dubbo City Development Corporation (DCDC) board chairman Bill Kelly was pivotal in the association’s start up, and chaired its first meeting.

His actions came after the DRRA refused membership to him and others.

Ms Duffy sees the new association as something that will be “a voice for the people”.

Ms Duffy would like to think the association would “easily achieve 2000 members in 12 months” and says it had already reached 160 membership applications.

Mr Peacocke said he was looking forward to ratepayers coming to the association with their issues and working with them to get solutions.

“Ratepayers need someone to go into bat for them, they can be overwhelmed by council, it’s not just this council, it’s every council,” he said.

“The other exciting aspect is trying to make councillors accountable.

“Some councillors talk the talk but they do not walk the walk.”

Mr Peacocke lost his position on the council at last year’s election.

Former MP Gerry Peacocke and businessmen Joe Snare and Frank Brennan have all agreed to be patrons.

Mr Kelly said the association would have subcommittees to represent the different suburbs in Dubbo and rural residents.

It had also secured a number of local businesses to support a loyalty card for members and was looking to expand the program with additional businesses in the future.

All executive members were elected unopposed and Mr Kelly declined a nomination to the presidency.

DRRA president Greg Mohr yesterday said it had gained new members in the past two weeks.

I thought the DCDC wasn't spending any time on this?

The DCDC are a publically funded body (funded by Dubbo City Council) yet they do this kind of stuff!

Bill Kelly denies involvement with the new association, yet he does this?

No wonder people are sick of the DCDC and their do nothing ness.

They still haven't even resolved their issue with their General Manager Rorque Poisson. Shame on Billy Kelly.

He reallyneeds to be stood down as chairman.

I even hear that Kelly is Poisson's landlord! No wonder the ICAC is looking into this!

And as for Sam Peacocke being on their executive - what a great advertisement for the original DRRA!

We have a new ratepayers association thats great now what are we going to get. Is it going to be a bun fight between the two groups, another arm of grow Dubbo or are we going to see the next group that is vying to run council.I might be a bit cynical but let us hope it is not the above and they really do get in and look after the ratepayers, we certainly could do with it.

Grow Dubbo and Bill Kelly are only proving Tina Reynolds point. They are clearly not doing their job.

What a breath of fresh air! And an impressive line up.

What a total scandal. DCDC should do its job the council pays for - not waste money and time on this.

now that you have started a second rate payers and residents association just remember the rate payers that are battling to live now in your decision making.best of luck to both associations.

Doesn't this new ratepayers association sound like a boys club. What this loyalty cards, I bet the cards are not for Bunnings or any other news agent that's not controlled by Snare's, as for Sam Peacock, if I remember right didn't he vote for the rate rise when he was a councillor and now he is trying to stick up for the rate payer, yes Sam we do have long memories and I'm afraid to say if Sam, but you got voted out of council for that very reason now you are trying to make up for your bad decisions. As I said it sounds more like a boys club rather then a voice for the people.

Why would anyone believe Bill Kelly is there to listen to him? People have been asking for accountability for over a year now. They're still waiting.

Wow 160 membership applications, isn't that more than ten times Ben's membership?

I have already spoken to one director who tells me that he is not happy at all with their performance.

They are not going to win public confidence if they continue on this all out offensive against Tina Reynolds and if they refuse to be accountable to the ratepayers.

I think it's time the DCDC be forced to put their achievements over the past 18 months on the table for all to see.
