A young mother-to-be, desperate to make a new start in Dubbo, is terrified that she will be homeless and living out of a car in a matter of days.
Danielle Matthews, 17, and her partner Trent Sciberras, 20, may have nowhere to live after tomorrow when their 28 days of crisis accommodation through the Department of Housing runs out.
Ms Matthews and Mr Sciberras came to Dubbo from Gunnedah a month ago hoping to make a life for themselves in the city, but are now faced with either returning to Gunnedah or becoming homeless.
“When I found out I was pregnant we decided to try making it on our own,” Ms Matthews said.
“Everyone said we could come to Dubbo and we would be able to get help, but no one has been able to do anything.”
Mr Sciberras said the couple had tried every option they could to find a home but had been unsuccessful.
“We’ve tried private rentals through the papers and we’ve tried agents but no one will give us anything. I don’t know why, I’ve got the references and I’ve got a job,” he said.
The couple is currently staying in a room at the Golden West Motor Inn, which is being paid for by the Department of Housing as crisis accommodation. The couple will have to move out tomorrow, claiming to have been told by the department that it cannot help them any further.
“They told us they could give us a maximum of 28 days help,” Ms Matthews said.
“They told us about priority housing but you need a birth certificate and I don’t have one. I’ve applied to get one but that takes time.”
A spokesperson for the Department of Housing was unable to throw any light on the situation yesterday. Ms Matthews said she and her partner had also approached charities for somewhere to stay but had been unsuccessful.
“We went through Emmanuel Care and got food vouchers. They helped us as much as they could,” she said.
The couple fear that their immediate future is bleak.
“We will probably have to live in the car until we have enough money to go back to Gunnedah,” Ms Matthews said.
They are appealing to the Dubbo community for help.
“We just want people to know and hopefully do something,” Ms Matthews said.
“Maybe there’s someone who can help us,” Mr Sciberras said.
The couple’s plight follows reporting by the Daily Liberal of a rental shortage in Dubbo.
