OUT ON THE STREET

A young mother-to-be, desperate to make a new start in Dubbo, is terrified that she will be homeless and living out of a car in a matter of days.

Danielle Matthews, 17, and her partner Trent Sciberras, 20, may have nowhere to live after tomorrow when their 28 days of crisis accommodation through the Department of Housing runs out.

Ms Matthews and Mr Sciberras came to Dubbo from Gunnedah a month ago hoping to make a life for themselves in the city, but are now faced with either returning to Gunnedah or becoming homeless.

“When I found out I was pregnant we decided to try making it on our own,” Ms Matthews said.

“Everyone said we could come to Dubbo and we would be able to get help, but no one has been able to do anything.”

Mr Sciberras said the couple had tried every option they could to find a home but had been unsuccessful.

“We’ve tried private rentals through the papers and we’ve tried agents but no one will give us anything. I don’t know why, I’ve got the references and I’ve got a job,” he said.

The couple is currently staying in a room at the Golden West Motor Inn, which is being paid for by the Department of Housing as crisis accommodation. The couple will have to move out tomorrow, claiming to have been told by the department that it cannot help them any further.

“They told us they could give us a maximum of 28 days help,” Ms Matthews said.

“They told us about priority housing but you need a birth certificate and I don’t have one. I’ve applied to get one but that takes time.”

A spokesperson for the Department of Housing was unable to throw any light on the situation yesterday. Ms Matthews said she and her partner had also approached charities for somewhere to stay but had been unsuccessful.

“We went through Emmanuel Care and got food vouchers. They helped us as much as they could,” she said.

The couple fear that their immediate future is bleak.

“We will probably have to live in the car until we have enough money to go back to Gunnedah,” Ms Matthews said.

They are appealing to the Dubbo community for help.

“We just want people to know and hopefully do something,” Ms Matthews said.

“Maybe there’s someone who can help us,” Mr Sciberras said.

The couple’s plight follows reporting by the Daily Liberal of a rental shortage in Dubbo.

Thanks to successive state & Federal govts crucifying mum & dad investors buying an investment property as a means of saving for retirement has become such a burden that mums and dads are looking elsewhere to invest and as a result available rental accommodation is not being built in sufficient numbers to cater for people such as in this story.

A quick look on a well known real estate site shows almost 30 properties in Dubbo under $200 per week which are available. I don't think these two are trying hard enough. Maybe if she got a job as well, then they'd have dual income and find to easier?

Dean has clearly never tried looking for work while pregnant. Try it before you comment.

If you cannot even buy food how can you pay rent. I agree with Dean maybe try a little harder.

I didnt have my first child until I was 36. We made sure we had a house , car and could afford anthing that our child needs before committing to this responsability. The lure of the $5k baby bonus is too great of a temtation to young people and should be abolished for this reason alone. What is there left to say, I feel for the unborn child however the country just cannot keep on throwing money around like it does. Lets face it, my children and their children have got a big enough debt to pay back already thanks to Mr Rudd.

Nice to know Dubbo has a reputation as saviour of the destitute. Maybe we should erect our own version of the Statue of Liberty on the Newell Highway inscribed with the Emma Lazarus poem as per the Amercian statue: "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door"

Dean I am a mum and know what it is like trying to find a job when ur pregnant it is so hard i even tried not telling the employer but then as soon as I did my job was gone. I was told that it wasnt a permanent position. As for Gee. Im 26 and have 5 kids none are twins. I dont agree with the baby bonus and have put it away for my kids when they get older but for medical reasons I had to have my kids before I got to old. I dont agree with some of the reasons that young adults have kids but there r some responsible ones out there. There are some older people out there that shouldnt have kids as well not just the young. The advantage is that my partner and I will grow up with our kids and have fun. where as the older ones dont have that luxury

first things first, the baby bonus is no longer given in one lump sum payment, it is now given to ALL Australians in fortnightly payments Danielle is about 5 months pregnant, there would not be many employers who would be willing to give her a job but if you know of any she would gladly take it. Danielle and Trent have applied for every house, flat, duplex and caravan that they can afford and have not received any good news, they can afford up to $200 a week the food vouchers were a one time thing, and the only reason that they needed them was because the day that they got to Dubbo they had their wallets stolen, maybe before people pass judgment, they should ask questions! Trent and Danielle are not looking for a hand out, all they want is a fair go, they are more than willing to pay/do their fair share the reason that i know all of this is because while Trent is AT WORK, Danielle and i are going through the paper, the net and the phone book looking for places for them to live,

With the pill, women can choose not to get pregnant. Her decision, her choice, ... our problem?

You can apply for an urgent birth certificate - in this case it would take 3 - 5 days!
