Orana Mall to undergo $20m expansion

12 Nov, 2009 01:33 PM
Upwards of $20 million will be spent to reaffirm Orana Mall’s position as the premier shopping venue in the central west.

The mall’s owners Comet (Aust) Pty Ltd, a part of the Bachrach Group, yesterday lodged a development application with Dubbo City Council to make an expansion to the current shopping centre.

Under the application, an additional 3600 square metres of leasable shop space and 160 extra car parks will be made available.

Included in that parking scheme will be an undercover area as well as easily accessible rooftop parking.

The project would commence next April and be ready before the end of 2011.

The application was announced at Orana Mall’s annual Christmas drinks, which were held at the Macquarie Inn last night.

Steve Gooley, the former Orana Mall centre manager who is now the general manager of Bachrach Group, told current tenants that there were already plans to bring new retailers to Dubbo.

“Discussions have commenced with a number of fashion retailers that will be opening new stores in this development once it is completed,” Mr Gooley said.

“They have been asking us for a number of years for a shop at Orana Mall.

“The development application states a development value of $16.2 million.

“On top of this will be shop fits and additional works which will exceed $20 million.”

After the announcement was made, Mr Gooley spoke to the Daily Liberal and reaffirmed his company’s commitment to Dubbo.

“This will bring in 160 jobs in the development phase, and 100 new jobs in the normal running of the extension of the shopping centre, and 15-25 new retailers, which is a fantastic thing for Dubbo,” he said.

“There has been an enormous amount of escape expenditure out of Dubbo in the last five years and this will go a very long way to stopping that.”

This has got to be a good thing for Dubbo. With extra housing going up in west Dubbo, there will be plenty of shoppers in Macquarie St as well as at Orana Mall. Development creates jobs, which Dubbo needs if they are aiming for population increase. By the way, has the DCDC had any hand in this? What are ratepayers getting for the $130 000 extra funding?

duff beer... move to Gilgandra if you want a small town with shopping in the main street... Dubbo is big enough to accomadate this growth and have both areas still survive..and you didnt read the part about the extra 160 car parks? this council is seriously holding Dubo back from continued growth as it is..

Just let the councillors get their hands on it.. Just like Alan Smith and Greg Matthews did with Harris Farm Markets - you just watch, they'll screw this one up too.

I'll believe it once it's all finished.....it's not like Dubbo doesn't seem to like development......Most people in Dubbo love "Mall" shopping, everything in one convenient place. Ye Olde Main Street shopping is going the way of the horse and cart....

The only thing in this early stage is not enough car parks you could easily double that and have a seperate area for caravans and trailers etc . Otherwise a good move for the people of Dubbo and travellers passing through.

Jason..... Go back to sydney if you dont like it here.. And if they do expand are we going to have more diversity in the stores or will we have more 'diva, equip' opening in every second store, i think they should bulldoze the orana mall as most shops there we already have in the main st. And people will get employed to do that im sure-kill two birds with one stone- LOL
