Dozens of locals will become Oporto employees in time to help the Australian-owned and growing enterprise open its first store in Dubbo next month.
The former KFC outlet on the corner of Gipps and Cobra streets is being renovated to house Oporto that boasts 100 stores in Australia and New Zealand along with an imminent plan to expand overseas.
Local firm Brett Harvey Design and Construction is carrying out the work on the building owned by Dubbo businessman Allen Marks.
Yesterday Oporto staff reported the refurbishment, costing more than $500,000, was on schedule for an end-of-September opening.
“Oporto is very excited to be coming to Dubbo and cannot wait to open the door,” a spokeswoman said. “The opening of the Oporto store at Dubbo will bring an opportunity for approximately 50 new jobs for the local community.
“Oporto believes in hiring the right people to represent our brand and is passionate in supporting the local community.
“At present no jobs have been filled. Oporto will be hiring soon.”
The finished building will be a “clean design, rendered building” bearing Oporto’s sun logo inside and out.
It will be painted in the Oporto colours of red, black and white.
Oporto founder Antonio Cerqueira opened the chain’s first store at North Bondi in 1986, offering Sydneysiders and tourists a taste of grilled chicken and sauces inspired by his Portuguese background.
Despite instant success, the first franchise was not granted until 1995.
Chief executive of Oporto Franchising Jeff Fisher says it is intent on taking the “Bondi Burger to the world”. Stores look set to open in the United States and United Kingdom this year.
Meanwhile, the Dubbo opening is being seen as another “highlight” of Oporto’s growth.
“We invite everyone to stop in … and find out why Oporto really is the great Australian bite,” Mr Fisher said.
