Nationals extend pre-selection period

20 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
The NSW Nationals have extended the closure of nominations for pre-selection for the State seat of Dubbo, announcing the new closing date of April 2.

State director Ben Franklin said the central executive recommended the Dubbo Electorate Council extend its nomination period.

He was positive about the “high quality” of potential candidates said to be considering nominating for Nationals’ preselection.

“We have some excellent community-focused candidates who have expressed their intention to stand for the seat of Dubbo at the 2011 State election,” Mr Franklin said.

Currently only former Dubbo mayor Greg Matthews has

made public his decision to nominate.

He was to make his nomination official by last night.

“However, there are others who are seriously considering running but not in a position to nominate ,” Mr Franklin said.

Whoever wins Nationals pre-selection will be in the box seat to challenge incumbent Dubbo MP Dawn Fardell for her seat, should the latter decide to run as expected.

The Labor and Greens parties are also expected to select candidates for the State election in March 2011.

Oh the irony that Matthews relinquished his mayoral position to an ALP man so he could concentrate on pre-selection for the Nationals. Surely this is unprecedented in Australian politics?

Seems the National Party finally now understand that Greg Mathews has no chance over Dawn Fardell, the nationals need to look at who topped the Dubbo City Council elections. When Dawn Fardell was elected as a councillor to Dubbo City Council she could not even get the figures that Shields and Reynolds got.

No one wants the Nationals nor do they want Fardell. Hope come this Liberal Party don't run a candidate in this seat. Yes its another political party but then again there will be another candidate to chose from. They have no vision for this area except their own personal agendas. We need a younger person that has been around the traps, someone to fight for this area instead of the rubbish we put up with now. The people of Dubbo need to lobby for a stronger representation for Dubbo and not the yes people we have to chose from at the moment. What happens when Mathews doesn't get in, do we see a by election for Dubbo or do we see a change of Mayor back to Mathews. We need new blood both to fight for us in this area and someone with some guts, to stick it into the politicians that believe NSW stops once you reach the blue mountains.

Who cares if Labor, Libs or Nats run a candidate? Same old hacks. We're fine with Dawn thanks.
